Text: Calculus 6th ed by James Stewart. Internet resources that accompany
this text are available also by clicking on the link then on your book
(Calculus 6E)
Material Covered: Chapters 1 - 6 and other topics as time permits.
Course Description: This course focuses on the concepts of limits,
continuity, derivatives, and integrals. Many applications of these concepts are
discussed.
Additional Help:
·
There is also on-line help at http://www.stewartcalculus.com/ .
Click on the book (Calculus 6E). In the left column there are many resources.
The most useful will be under Web Links, select the appropriate chapter of the text at the top. You
will also find calculator help here.
·
Complete
manuals are available on-line for all
TI calculators at http://education.ti.com/us/global/guides.html
- You will find your TI calculator under the product drop-down menu.
·
There are two
CD's that come with your book. The TEC disk has hints for the exercises in red in
your book. It also contains helpful practice modules for selected topics. The
Interactive Video Skillbuilder has videos of
instructors explaining some examples in the text and some practice quizzes and
tutorials.
Calculators:
It is expected that everyone have at least a scientific calculator with
trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. Most students will find
it helpful in their daily work to have a graphing calculator to help in
visualizing and interpreting graphs of functions, and it is helpful to have a
multi-line viewing screen when typing in and calculating complicated
expressions. Since calculation of limits, derivatives and integrals is
part of the requirement and assessment in this course, which can be performed
on these calculators, students with these calculators should expect some
limited use of their calculator on some exams or parts of some exams.
Maple software: Maple is a Computer Algebra System (CAS)
software, which is available in the computer lab SE 105. It is comparable to
other CAS software packages like Derive, Mathematica,
and MatLab. Help with this software is available at
the Maple-soft
website
Academic Integrity: Work that is turned in for an individual grade should be your work.
From the SVSU Code of Student Conduct 1.8.1
: "No student shall cheat, plagiarize or facilitate academic
dishonesty by another student. Students are responsible for completing
all assigned academic work without unauthorized aid of any kind." If
you have any questions about what constitutes academic dishonesty, please ask
me and/or see the website at http://www.svsu.edu/academicintegrity/
Grading: There will be three exams (200 points each) and a
comprehensive final exam (250 points). There will also be an additional 150
homework points consisting of homework problems,
in-class assignments, take-home assignments, quizzes and computer assignments
(Maple). There will be NO make-ups on
missed homework assignments.
Grading
Scale: Total points = 1000. Your grade will be determined by the
following percentages.

Homework: These are problems from each section that you should
have worked on for the next class period. I will announce in class
if homework problems are to be turned in the next class period as part of your
"homework" grade. There are both even and odd (solutions to odds are
in the back and worked out in the student solutions manual) problems.
- Descriptively: Translate mathematical concepts into everyday terms and vice-versa.
- Algebraically: Use algebraic and/or symbolic manipulation.
- Numerically: Work with numerical data or provide numerical approximation.
- Graphically: Provide or receive information presented in the form of a graph.
