A Ceramic Artist Statement

An explanation of my work became apparent while attending a sculpture symposium. Robert Morris quoted the following: "Sculpture is what you run into while backing up to look at a painting."

Offered as a wry point, that simple statement helped me realize more clearly the goal I had been seeking. To clarify my point, my work has rarely returned unharmed after being "on the road" or backed into. I often find myself providing proper "burial" for my sculptures. This has led me to rethink my approach to the clay medium. These last rites result in the creation of further sculpures that explore mixed media in an effort to create something that is indestructable.

But it is more than that.

As I grieved, I became acutely aware of a negligence toward art. It is frequently taken for granted by those who depend on it. My work became a metaphor for the apathy and disconnection that surrounded me daily. From this, much of my work has addressed why and how things happen. I feel that there is an incorporeal energy that surrounds and navigates daily events. As an example, my Mandala series addresses my ideas on this as I create my own "symbols of the universe". My work seeks something tangible from the intangible.
